About the College
Established in 1960, Government Autonomous College, Phulbani is a premier institution located in the heart of Kandhamal district, Odisha—a region known for its rich tribal heritage and natural beauty. Originally known as Government Science College, Phulbani, the institution played a pivotal role in higher education within the erstwhile tribal district of Boudh and Phulbani.
Initially affiliated with Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, the College offered major subjects in Arts and Science. Following the establishment of Berhampur University in 1967, the College came under its affiliation and was renamed Government College, Phulbani. It was granted the status of a Lead College in 1991 and achieved Autonomous status from the UGC in 2004.
Over the years, the College has progressively expanded its academic portfolio. Postgraduate programmes commenced with Political Science in 1980, followed by the introduction of B.Com. in 1990 and M.Sc. in Life Sciences in 1994. In 1989–90, the institution was recognized as a Study Centre for the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), significantly broadening access to higher education. Additionally, the College has been offering self-financed BCA and BBA programmes since 2015, catering to the growing demand for professional courses in the region.
Currently, the College offers undergraduate programmes across 19 departments in Arts, Science, and Commerce, along with postgraduate courses in 14 departments, supporting student strength of 2,683. Residential facilities include three boys’ hostels and one ladies’ hostel, together accommodating nearly 1,000 students.
Beyond academics, the College fosters holistic development through co-curricular support systems such as NCC, NSS, YRC & RRC ensuring students are equipped for both personal and professional growth.
The College is located in the lap of idyllic natural surroundings in a valley surrounded by lush green hillocks and a murmuring river “Salunki” which provides educational inspiration to the young minds pursuing their studies in this august Institution. The College is poised for prosperity and is dedicated to disseminate knowledge, higher education in the midst of challenging circumstances.
